Chapter 31 - Val

Val crouched and panted. She couldn’t get up. Evan peered at her with their strange all silver eyes. They reached out to her with their long grey fingers but stopped just before they touched her.

“Val? Are you all right?” Evan tilted their head to the right.

Val kept her eyes on the ground. Her core and insides hurt so much that it detracted from the burning cuts Dev's talons had made. She blinked to keep the moisture from her eyes and tried to tilt her head up, but the bite from Dev had opened again and stung.

“Yeah, I’m ok.”

Evan put their hand out for her to take. Val grabbed it without thought and then yelped. Shit, that was the shoulder that Dev had taken a chunk out of.

“Val?” Evan asked and stopped.

Val dropped their hand and reached out with her other one. Slowly, painfully, she got to her feet. “Sorry. I’m not being a very good sparring partner today.”

Evan’s long fingers held onto her hand for a moment before they let go. Val peered at her almost friend. Part of her wanted to befriend the doppelgänger because they’d always been kind to her. She sighed because she understood it was impossible. Dev wouldn’t allow her to get attached to the others, and soon she’d be free from there and being alive if everything worked out the way she hoped.

Val wiped the sweat from her brow. They’d barely even started. Her hand trembled when it touched her forehead. Damn, she was exhausted. She wanted to go back to bed, even though she knew it wouldn’t happen. After this, she had a couple of classes and then more team exercises with the others.

“I need to talk to Red. I’ll be right back. Why don’t you sit until I get back? You’re pale,” Evan said.

Val didn’t respond but nodded. She sank down on the bench. Ouch! How could sitting be worse than standing? She wrapped her arms around her stomach and stared at the floor. The other trainees continued to spar, but she didn’t bother to watch them.

“Valdis?” Red’s booming voice made her jump.

She raised her head. It hurt because of how tall he was and the wounds on her neck and shoulder. His light eyes narrowed as he roved them over her, his expression under his massive beard made it challenging to read. She waited for him to speak.

“You spent time with your boyfriend recently?” he asked.

“Yeah, why?”

Red stepped forward and twisted her head to the side. Crap, that hurt.

“You’re bleeding all over your uniform. You bleeding from anywhere else?” Red asked.

Val swallowed as her face flushed. Her eyes scanned the room and found Evan near the other trainees with a guilty expression. She huffed, knowing she wouldn’t be friends with them now.

“No,” Val lied.

“Come with me,” Red ordered and stepped back.

Val gritted her teeth and stood. She forced her gait to appear normal, even though each step pained her. They entered Red’s tiny office.

“Sit.” He gestured to the only other chair in the room.
